                        Hangzhou City
Hangzhou lies in the northern part of Zhejiang Province in southeastern China's coast and the lower reaches of the Qiantang River. It consists of one county-level city, five districts and two counties. It covers a total area of 16,596 sq km including 688-sq-km urban area, and has a population of 5.98 million including 1.63 million urban citizens.
Hangzhou was one of China's famous seven ancient capitals. It has a history of more than 2,200 years since the Qin Dynasty (221-206 B.C.) when the county system was established. The states of Wu and Yue in the Five Dynasties (907-960) and the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) had set up capitals in Hangzhou. Today, Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province. It is also one of the country's major tourist attractions and historic and cultural cities designated by the State Council.
Hangzhou enjoys super natural conditions, and is known as
a "land of fish and rice," and a "capital of silk and satin."
Hangzhou abounds in tourism resources. Its unique natural scenery and thousands of years of human civilization have created famous beautiful landscape. The city has two national scenic spots -- the West Lake and the "Two Rivers and One Lake Scenery". Known as a "pearl in the East", the West Lake is located in the west of the city. The rippling water and the nearby historic and cultural relics as well as the landscape form a pleasing contrast. The 100-km Fuchunjiang River-Xin'anjiang River-Qiandao Lake scenic spot is noted as a wonder under the heaven, a "golden tourism route".
With humid air, Hangzhou is a famous high-yield farming area in the country. It is rich in flax, tea, silkworm cocoons and rice. It has a good industrial foundation with the processing industry as the mainstay. It has formed six pillar industries:    large machinery and complete sets of equipment, automobiles and related parts, household electric appliances, electronics and telecommunications equipment, fine chemicals and pharmaceutics, and chemical fibers. Large oxygen-making machines, high-precision flat grinder, marine gear casing, industrial steam turbines and small and medium-sized power generating units have a ready market in China and are competitive on the international market. The electronics and meter and instrument industry is a rising industry in Hangzhou. Its telecommunication equipment, digital control cutters and multi-functional disposal system of the Chinese characters have ranked among the top in the country. Hangzhou, whose textile industry consists of silk, cotton, flax, wool and chemical fibers, is one of China's 12 export-oriented textile processing centers, and one of China's ten export-oriented garment production centers.
Hangzhou has four state development zones--Hangzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, Zhejiang State Tourism and Holiday Zone, Hangzhou Economic and Technology Development Zone and Xiaoshan Economic and Technology Development Zone, which have become Hangzhou's export-oriented "windows" and "special economic zones."
