Hohhot, (literally meaning "Green Town" in Mongolian), the
capital of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, is an ancient
town, which was founded in 1581 on the proposal of Altan Khan
(1507-1582), 17th generation descendent of Genghis Khan, beyond the Great Wall.
The city is divided into four districts, four counties and
one banner (county) with an area of 17,224 sq. km. With a total
population of more than 1.94 million, it has 36 ethnic groups including Mongolian, Hui,
Han, Manchurian, Oroqen, etc.
Hohhot is situated on a plateau lying at 1,000 m at the edge
of the Mongolian grasslands, some 425 km. northwest of Beijing.
With a pleasant weather in summer, and low temperature in
winter which lasts 5-6 months, Hohhot has a mean annual
temperature of 5.6 degrees centigrade, and a mean annual
precipitation of 400 mm.
Hohhot is an important communications hub in the region as
well as in northwestern China. The Beijing-Baotou, Hohhot-Taiyuan and Hohhot-Lanzhou
railways run through the city. The city also has dozens of domestic air routes and two
international air routes.
Hohhot is rich in resources. The main categories verified by now
include: coal, graphite, marble stone, pearlite,
bentonite, kaolin, lead and zinc. The amount of these resources
is abundant and the quantity is large enough with excellent
exploitation value as well as promising future. It is also rich
in agricultural and livestock resources such as wool, meat, milk
and medicinal herbs with great development potential.
Hohhot has built two economic development zones by the end
of 1995: the Ruyi Economic Development Zone and the Jichuan
Economic Development Zone.
