   Zhengzhou is the capital city as well as political, economic and cultural center of Henan Province. As an important hub of communications in China, Zhengzhou is also a major city on the new Eurasia Continental Bridge as well as an open city famous for its historical and cultural attractions. It has rated as one of the top 50 Chinese cities in terms of comprehensive economic strength and also as one of the top 40 Chinese cities with the most favorable investment environment. In 1995, it joined the international organization of economic cooperation networks of small and medium-size cities.
   Situated in the Central Plains of China comprising the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, Zhengzhou is by the Yellow River in the north, at the foot of Mount Songshan in the west and is bordered by the Yellow River-Huaihe River valley plain in the southeast. Zhengzhou has a total area of 7,446.2 sq km, including 1,010.3 sq km of urban districts and 117.2 sq km of developed areas. It has five cities, one county and six urban districts under its jurisdiction. It has a total population of 6.076 million, including an urban population of nearly 2 million.
   Zhengzhou's main industries include: textiles, food processing, power, machine-building, metallurgy, chemicals, coal and pharmaceuticals. In particular, the metallurgical industry of Zhengzhou accounts for more than half of China's aluminum oxide production.
   Zhengzhou is the scientific and technological and educational center of Henan Province. For every 10,000 local residents, there are 145 scientists and researchers, and scientific and technological progress contributes 32 percent to the city's increased industrial output value. For every 10,000 local residents, there are 102 university graduates and 143 graduates from various secondary specialized schools.
   Zhengzhou has a relatively developed system of communications and relatively complete infrastructure. It serves as the meeting place of the Beijing-Shenzhen and Lianyungang-Tianshui national highways as well as the Jing-Guang (Beijing-Guangzhou) and Long-Hai (Lianyungang-Lanzhou) railway lines. Therefore, it has always been called the "heart of China's railway networks." Its investment environment has been improved continuously, with the respective construction of the flyover highway running through the city from the east to the west, the major bridge striding over railway lines at the Zhengzhou North Railway Station, and a total of 46 new roads, including the west ring road and the north ring road. Besides, the Zhengzhou-Kaifeng, Zhengzhou-Luoyang and Zhengzhou-Xinxiang Expressways have been opened. Zhengzhou's telecommunications sector has developed rapidly with a sharp increase in the number of users of IDD phones, mobile phones and wireless pagers.
   Along with the development of domestic trade, Zhengzhou has quickened its pace of economic restructuring and opening up. The Zhengzhou New and High Technology Industrial Development Zone -- the city's window for opening to the outside world -- has a total area of five sq km. The zone has ranked among the top 10 most advanced development zones in China.
